Words Behind The Pictures Challenge

The first Saturday of every month, from September, 2009, through to August, 2010, an electronic copy of one screenplay will be made available through this blog.
The goal is to read the screenplay and then watch the movie before the end of that month and comment on what you’ve experienced.
The more screenplays you get through, the stronger you are as a reading challenger, but you only need to do one month to consider yourself to have completed this challenge.
Of course, the more months you complete, the more chances you’ll have for winning a collection of screenplays I’ll be awarding to one random participant in August, 2010.
The Screenplays
Here are the screenplays available for download – right-click and choose “Save link as…”
September – Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Margot’s thoughts
Stacy’s thoughts
Michael’s thoughts
October – The Silence Of The Lambs
November – Your choice of one of three screenplays that were turned into films starring Humphrey Bogart:
Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep
Stacy’s thoughts on The Big Sleep
Margot’s thoughts on The Big Sleep
If you are interested in participating, please post about it on your blog and link to the post by using Mr. Linky below.
And here’s a sidebar-friendly sized image for the challenge as well:

Count me in Michael. I’ll post about it sometime this next week. My husband has agree to do this with me. Any chance you might consider a Western?

Hi Margot, it is so great to hear that you are joining in. And there will definitely be some Western titles up for voting.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a screenplay (gasp!). Let me think about it and look at how I’m doing on my other challenges. It’s a great idea, so I’ll probably be back

Hi Stacy, since you haven’t read screenplays before, I can let you know that they will likely be among the quickest reads you will ever have. (Did that sound like a sales pitch? Guess it sorta was.)

Michael,
One quick question: Do I have to have an e-reader of some kind to read the screenplay? I’m somewhat techi-challenged so I’m even sure how to ask you what I need.

Hi Margot, no, you won’t need an e-reader for the screenplay; I’ll provide an electronic copy that you’ll be able to read on your computer. Of course, you may also be able to find a hard copy of it through your library if you are lucky.

Okay, I’m in. I have 3 books left for each of the 3 challenges I’m currently in, so I think I can do this
I’ll post about it this weekend.
I’m looking forward to trying something new.

Hi Stacy, great to have you join in.

I read about this challenge on Margot’s blog, and I knew I was wavering when I clicked through to your blog, Michael. I’d promised myself no more challenges, because I haven’t been very adept at keeping my challenge posts up-to-date. But I love both plays and screenplays, and then I saw the list you have up in your poll, and now I find myself jumping in. This just looks like too much fun to resist!

This is great to hear, Belle – you’re in for an easy and fun challenge.
By the way, I see that you are winding down on a writing project called “Nantucket” – look forward to reading more about that in the days ahead.

I would love to get involved but I can’t stand reading too much on my computer screen and I don’t have any type of digital reading device. (whinge, whinge, whine, whine) What if I just chose one screenplay or something – I guess that would negate the purpose of the challenge. I will have a look at my local library just in case they have any screenplays.

Hi Jemima, I think you may have more luck for the October screenplay, since the ones to be voted on will all be easier to find than this one. I’ll be putting up the list soon for voting.

Hi Linday, there’s no blog requirement, just that you share your thoughts on the screenplay and movie – that could be done through the comments section here, or via email as well, where you could attach an audio file of your opinion.

What a wonderful idea! I have never read a screen play, but would be thrilled to start.
I am an English teacher and always try to train my students to read the book before watching the movie. I think this challenge would really help me in the classroom to not only relate to my students, but to teach them something new that would enjoy.
Let me give some thought before signing up — but I am pretty sure I have already convinced myself

Hi Molly,
If you have any particular movie in mind for your class rather than the ones that are voted for over the next few months, let me know and I’ll see if I have the screenplay for it. Sharing that screenplay with your class would definitely count for participating in the challenge.

Hi Michael, this is a cool idea. I was discussing it with my daughter and she thought it would be cool to read the screenplay to the Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility, I guess you could compare the adaptation to the original book. You could do that with Silence of the lambs, too of course , creepy movie and book. Bell says she would also like to read the screenplay to another Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh film called Dead Again. She is a big fan of both Thompson and Branagh.
Anyway Around the World is currently on its way to India, and I just dropped by to pass on an award so if your into the award thing stop by.
I will be following the screenplay challenge with interest. Actually I just thought of another recent film that would be interesting to read the screenplay for; Stardust .
Happy blogging

I’m not really into reading Silence of the Lambs, but I’ll be interested in seeing what you do in future months. Like I said in my Teaser comment, I’ve never read a screenplay. Could be fun!
