Musing Mondays – August 24, 2009
Today, Rebecca at Just One More Page asks about stand-alone books and series books.
Do you prefer to read stand-alone books, or books in series? Do you stick with a series the whole way through or stop after the first installment? Are there any particular series you enjoy?
For the most part, my reading history indicates that I prefer to read stand-alone books in most genres, but I will go into series territory for science fiction and fantasy. So long as the individual books in the series maintain a level of quality, I’m in for the full ride. The original Foundation trilogy by Asimov (later expanded) was a set that I have always enjoyed.

I just like books, books and MORE BOOKS! I don’t care if they’re part of a series or not. Here’s my full response.

I’ve started a couple of series, but I am really hesitant about getting involved in others. I pretty much prefer stand alone books also. I think that helps to keep my reading schedule more open to new authors and something that may have caught my eye.

Even though I prefer stand-alone books, I seem to get caught up in series: fantasy, mysteries, and Bernard Cornwell. I try to keep it to trilogies, unless the writing and stories are exceptional or “unputdownable.”

I love series! especially sci fi or fantasy. They always seem to be the genre filled with series haven’t you noticed?

I like them both, but I agree the real issue is maintaining the quality in a series and not using it as a cop out.

That is a good question. For me it makes no difference if the book is a stand alone or in a series. As long as the book is good I will continue to read the series.
I discovered since reading these past few years that if I like a book either its a stand alone or in a series that I will read all the authors previous books. IE James Patterson, I am almost complete in the adult books just have to read his YA stuff.
