Musing Mondays – The Lists

This week, Rebecca at asks about wishlists.
Do you keep a book wishlist, either on paper, Amazon/etc, or via a book database site (Shelfari, GoodReads, LibraryThing)? If yes, do you share this list with others (especially coming up to Christmas)?
I keep an Excel spreadsheet for books that I hear or read about, and it has a couple of tabs. One is for books that I’d like to read myself, and the other tab is for books that seem like they would be good for other readers I know.
I also try to mark down where the recommendations came from, although sometimes I don’t remember to grab that detail. I am at multiple computers during the course of a normal day, so if I come across a good book when I am not on my main computer, I’ll type it in a text file to save on a USB keychain drive, or scribble it on a scrap of paper, and hopefully will get around to adding it into the main spreadsheet. As for sharing the list, I don’t post it on any site, nor do I share it with people aside from my wife.

That sounds very organised. I just use a little notebook.

I use a spreadsheet as well and want to add where the recommendation came from.

I use Amazon for my wish list, and the wish list button allows me to add a book from anywhere: LibraryThing, a blog, even something I might see on Barnes & Noble.

I was keeping a wish list of books in a note book but for some reason I haven’t entered anything lately into it. Which could be a good thing or not?

I never thought of it as a wish list, but I do have a list on Goodreads labeled “not at my library”. If those books show up at my library, I will add them to my TBR list. I have never shown this list to anyone because people don’t really buy me books. Perhaps I should point it out to my kids because they never know what to get me for gift-giving occasions

I have a spreadsheet too. But that’s for books that I have cataloged in three different boxes (I need to keep track! haha)

That is so sweet that you keep a list of books for other readers you know! I think that’s a terrific idea. What I do is I immediately e-mail or tweet the person and give them the link to the review or wherever I saw it if it was online. I do this because as soon as it has left my screen it has left my mind and I will never think to tell the person.
I, too, am not very good at remembering where the recommendations came from. I like your idea to write it down with the book in your list. Why didn’t I think of that?
