Teaser Tuesdays – Four Weddings And A Funeral
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
By the time “Four Weddings And A Funeral” made Hugh Grant a romantic comedy star, the writer Richard Curtis had tuned his comedic writing muscles through years of work with Rowan Atkinson, first through the Black Adder series, and then Mr. Bean. And it paid off for Mr. Curtis quite nicely, with an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay.
Released on March 9th, 1994, “Four Weddings And A Funeral” did particularly well with audiences and critics, reeling people in with its smartly crafted story of Charles (Hugh Grant) and his serial monogamist ways as he and five old friends attend the titular four weddings and a funeral. If you have yet to see this movie, put it on your list to watch some day.
The teaser below is from the reception at the first of the weddings, for Charles’ friends Angus and Laura, where Charles tries to make small talk with a rather stiff acquaintance.
CHARLES
So , John – how’s that gorgeous girlfriend of yours?
JOHN
She is no longer my girlfriend.
CHARLES
O dear – still, I wouldn’t get too gloomy – rumour has it she never stopped bonking old Toby de Lisle, just in case you didn’t work out.
JOHN
She is now my wife.
CHARLES
Excellent. Excellent. Congratulations.

I remember that scene. It made me laugh again. I want to watch that movie again – or read the screenplay. What’s our pick for November?

I’m not a fan of Hugh Grant, but I did see this movie. Sorry I kindof bombed out of your challenge. But I’ve kept up with everybody’s comments. I think it’s interesting that you read screen plays.

I saw this movie some time ago. I remember enjoying it. If you like British humor, you might like the book I just reviewed, Friends Like These, by a BBC documentary host and author of the screenplay, Yes Man.

Love British comedies, really liked Rowan Atkinson as the priest in that movie. Did Richard Curtis write Black Adder Goes Forth that was an amazing series, all of Black Adder was great but that one especially so.

I love that movie. I cry like a baby at the funeral. And Hugh doing what he does well is actually charming.
